The Landscape Architect: A little history...
Profession Today: The Landscape Architect's work embraces the art of site planning, site design and the preparation of construction documents for installing the visual and physical environment around us.

Fifty years ago: Our society was less complex and Landscape Architects then had more responsibilities then they do today. Besides site design, planting and irrigation, Landscape Architects also provided site engineering, structural design, grading and drainage, and several layers of urban planning from site design to regional scale.

Long, long ago: The title of Landscape Architect, didn't appear
in the United States until 100+ years ago. However, the profession has been practiced throughout the world for many hundreds of years.
Central Park in New York City and the public park system in Boston were designed in the mid 1800's. These notable landmarks were enjoying years of heavy use before the title: Landscape Architecture, was a recognized by our Government
in 1898, as a profession.

Licensing in California: The Landscape Architects Technical Committee (LATC), under the purview of the California Architects Board, was created by the California Legislature in the late 1950s. This Committee is still responsible for testing applicants and inforcing professional standards in California.

Licensing in Hawaii: Technical Standards for testing and licensing Landscape Architects in Hawaii, was adopted by the Hawaiian Department of Consumer Affairs in 1969-70.

Barry is licensed in both California  #1568 and Hawaii  #7406...

Range of Skills:
The Profession Today: Over the last 50 years, the world has became more demanding and some Landscape Architecture services became professions into themselves, such as:  urban and regional planning, construction administration, irrigation design, landscape construction and contract administration and several engineering applications.
The scope of services offered by Senior Landscape Architects include these skills.

The Project Site: Most often the project begin with raw land, however L.A.'s also work with complex urban settings, surrounded by man made features and supporting services, which means: the analysis and planning of a given project can vary as much as the project itself.

The planning process: Early perceptions are formed by opportunities and limitations, that are fixed by existing conditions, such as:  man made structures, natural land forms, access or circulation options, utility services, adjacent land use and requirements demanded by local Reviewing Agencies.
