Professional History
1970's...After
completing the MLA program at Michigan, Barry backpacked around southern Europe
and the Mediterranean for several months, visiting gardens and historical sites.
He also attended seminars, such as Ekistics in
Athens.
After traveling, Barry spent some time interviewing and was offered a position
with firms in Michigan, Boston and in several
cities along
the West Coast. However Hawaii had the scale of work he was looking for.
The Viet Nam War wound down a few years earlier and the backlog of challenging
projects across the Pacific was impressive. They were now popping up all across the Pacific Rim.
He moved his family to Honolulu and quickly went to work as Project
Manager-Landscape Architect, on projects located throughout State of Hawaii,
Melbourne Australia and Fiji. Suddenly, after four years of intense work, the economy
suddenly shifted into a fast decline. Work seemed to dry up overnight.
Barry returned with his family to California, where after building an addition onto his brothers home,
he settled his family and consultant practice into the Napa Valley. It wasn't long before clients and friends referred to this
landscape architect as "Barron's Company,"
and the name stuck...
1980's...
Barry got his contractor's license and during a "Design-Build" period, Barron's Company
developed a wide variety of
projects throughout the North Bay Area, including: private estates, wineries,
parks and a couple of new schools. While laying out a 100 acre recreation area for Hewlett
Packard's Santa Rosa Division, he designed and built his one and only dance
pavilion, which he learned recently, still gets allot of use by HP employees.
By this time
the Eldridge family purchased a 150 year old Victorian in St. Helena. This was
an interesting property with it's own well, fruit trees and an old barn in the
back.
The planting palate started in the front yard with green and white plantings which evolved into brighter
pastels as one walked down through the property to the large vegetable garden
and creek beyond.
During this Napa Valley period, he served on several design review boards
and in 1984, he was elected to the City Council of St. Helena. This is when the work of
other professionals took on a different perspective. After serving on the council for 4 years
the economy turned and he returned to Hawaiian Islands where the challenging projects could still be found.
1990's... to Present:
Licensed now in Hawaii as well as California, Barry found himself heading into a
different direction, assignments now include: destination resort hotels, urban high rise gardens, condominium resorts, a comprehensive life care facility, world class
water features and regional corporate centers.
This was an exciting few years, but then in '94, the economy headed South again,
but even faster. Once again Barry had to leave the Islands.
Barry joined a Sacramento firm that
landed a very exciting
project, and they needed an experienced professional on board. For the following three years Barry
worked on several smaller, unique assignments, but his primary focus was a 2,500
acre regional park in Riverside County (A Metropolitan Water District project).
Barry laid out three villages, 250 acres of recreation lakes, thousands of camping
facilities, equestrian centers, sports complex, golf courses, several hotels and
a conference center. He even sited a winery. When internal circumstances caused
the client to pull back and re-evaluate their objectives, Barry had no trouble
moving onto
other assignments in the San
Francisco Bay Area.
As Senior Landscape Architect with a multidiscipline design office in Redwood
City, Barry's primary project was a 125 acre Research and Development Campus on the
edge of San Francisco Bay. He provided the site planning and site design, while
managing the autoCAD team and field responsibilities. This project included: ten high-rise
Research and Development buildings, shoreline conditions, surrounding wildlife
sanctuaries, storm water retention basins, water features and extensive recreation facilities
across the campus.
At this time...:
Barry offers consultant service from his home office in Sacramento,
California. After many years of working for himself under
contract, or as a
staff professional, he now keeps the pace a little slower.
